Practically everywhere you turn now there are vampires! Whether it's on TV with award winning shows such as HBO's True Blood or on the big screen with films like the ridiculously popular Twilight and it's equally successful sequel The Twilight Saga: New Moon, there just seems to be no getting away from the vampire's bite. Now two-time Oscar nominee Ethan Hawke takes a stab at the vampire genre with his bloody and realistic new film Daybreakers, opening in theaters on January 8th, directed by Peter and Michael Spierig who helmed the hit Zombie film Undead. Hawke, who received his nominations for co-writing Before Sunset and starring opposite Denzel Washington in Training Day, first caught audience's attention with his performance in the film Dead Poets Society but it was his roles in Ben Stiller's Reality Bites and Richard Linklater's Before Sunrise that made him a star. Incidentally, Daybreakers marks the actors first appearance in a sci-fi or genre film since his role in the popular, now almost "cult classic," film Gattaca over a decade ago. We recently had a chance to sit down with the accomplished actor/writer/director/novelist and talk about the new film, the genre, his role, working with the "king of vampire actors" Willem Dafoe, how he chooses his projects and of course ... vampires! In film Daybreakers, the year is 2019 and a mysterious plague has swept over the earth, transforming the majority of the world's population into vampires. Humans are now an endangered, second-class species, forced into hiding as they are hunted and farmed for vampire consumption to the brink of extinction. It's all up to Edward Dalton (Hawke), a vampire researcher who refuses to feed on human blood, to perfect a blood substitute that might sustain vampires and spare the few remaining humans. But time and hope are running out until Ed meets Audrey (Claudia Karvan), a human survivor who leads him to a startling medical breakthrough, and Lionel "Elvis" Cormac (Willem Dafoe), a fellow human survivor who is harboring a shocking secret that could change the world. Armed with knowledge that both humans and vampires will kill for, Ed must battle his own kind in a deadly struggle that will decide the fate of the human race. Starring Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, Claudia Karvan, Michael Dorman, Vince Colosimo, Isabel Lucas and Sam Neill. Directed by The Spierig Brothers, Daybreakers opens in theaters on January 8th.
