In 1994, after shooting El Mariachi and while waiting to make Desperado, director Robert Rodriguez was hired by 20th Century Fox to write a screenplay for a new film in the Predator franchise. The script he wrote was to act as a direct sequel to the first film, ignoring Predator 2, and featuring the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger as Dutch. While that film was never made, Rodriguez went on to direct several extremely successful films including Spy Kids and Sin City, while Fox went on to make some less than impressive Alien vs. Predator films. Deciding to return the scary creatures to their proper franchises, Fox enlisted Rodriguez again to produce a new film loosely based on his original screenplay, minus Governor Schwarzenegger's character. The result is Predators, opening in theaters on July 9th, which is directed by Nimród Antal (Armored) and stars Oscar winner Adrien Brody (King Kong), Topher Grace (Spider-Man 3), Alice Braga (I Am Legend), Danny Trejo (Grindhouse), Walton Goggins (TV's The Shield) and Oscar Nominee Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix). We recently had an opportunity to sit down and speak with the film's star Adrien Brody, it's director Nimród Antal and writer/producer Robert Rodriguez to discuss the new film, Rodriguez's original script, the film's connections to Schwarzenegger's movie and a possible sequel or prequel to this film planned for the future. A bold new chapter in the Predator universe, Predators was shot on location under Rodriguez's creative auspices at the filmmaker's Austin-based Troublemaker Studios, and is directed by Nimród Antal. The film stars Adrien Brody as Royce, a mercenary who reluctantly leads a group of elite warriors who come to realize they've been brought together on an alien planet... as prey. With the exception of a disgraced physician (Topher Grace), they are all cold-blooded killers, mercenaries, Yakuza, convict and death squad members. Human "Predators" that are now being systemically hunted and eliminated by a new breed of alien Predators.
