Unarguably one of the most popular, legendary and influential rock bands of all time has got to be The Doors. The band formed in 1965 after a chance meeting on Venice Beach, in California, between fellow UCLA film school alumni acquaintances Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek. Jim read Ray some of his poetry and Manzarek, impressed by Morrison's lyrics, suggested they start a band. Soon drummer John Densmore and guitarist Robby Krieger joined the group, and with Manzarek on keyboards and Morrison supplying the lead vocals, the rest is rock n' roll history. The group went on to be one of the most controversial and unpredictable musical acts in rock n' roll history, due mostly to Morrison's wild and charismatic persona, but also recorded some of the most memorable and influential music of their time. While Morrison died in 1971, the band has continued to spread the music and the message of Jim Morrison in the decades since. Now with the help of personal footage, archival footage and Morrison's own never-before-seen film, the band has assembled a new documentary called, When You're Strange, which opened in theaters on April 9th. In Manzarek's own words this film is "the anti- Oliver Stone" movie and will act as "the true story of The Doors.'" We recently had a rare opportunity to sit down with the three remaining members of the band, Ray Manzarek, John Densmore and Robby Krieger, as well as the film's director, Tom DiCillo, to discuss the new movie, the legacy of the band's music and the legend that is Jim Morrison. When You're Strange uncovers historic and previously unseen footage of the illustrious rock quartet and provides new insight into the revolutionary impact of its music and legacy. Directed by award-winning writer/director Tom DiCillo and narrated by Johnny Depp, the film is a riveting account of the band's history and the first feature documentary about them. The film reveals a intimate perspective on the creative chemistry between drummer John Densmore, guitarist Robby Krieger, keyboardist Ray Manzarek and singer Jim Morrison, four brilliant artists, who made The Doors one of America's most iconic and influential rock bands. Using footage shot between the band's 1965 formation and Morrison 's 1971 death, When You're Strange follows the band from the corridors of UCLA's film school, where Ray Manzarek and Morrison met, to the stages of sold-out arenas. The film captures the zeitgeist and fraction of an era while providing insight into who The Doors were, what they became and what they meant to our culture. The Doors sold more than 80 million albums and continue to sell more than one million albums a year to this day.
