We have our first proper look at Fast & Furious: Spy Racers. This animated series looks to expand the scope of the franchise and bring the action to the small screen, via Netflix. While the show won't be following the same cast of characters we've come to know and love over the years, it's still keeping things in the family theme, as we'll be going on this surely action-filled journey with Tony Toretto, cousin of Vin Diesel's Dom Toretto. And there are going to be lots of fast cars, based on this teaser.

The footage was unveiled by DreamWorks at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival. This really is just a teaser in the true sense. It's mere seconds long and doesn't give us anything to go on in the way of story or dialogue. It does, however, feature two tricked out cars racing in a ravine in a fashion that seems befitting of this particular franchise. It's wild and seemingly unrealistic, though admittedly could be very entertaining. Even though it's animated, it does seem to capture the spirit of the movies quite well. It's brief, but this could prove to be a fitting extension of the series.

Fast & Furious: Spy Racers centers on Tony Toretto, who follows in the footsteps of his cousin Dom when he and his group of pals are recruited by a government agency. They're tasked with infiltrating an elite racing league that serves as a front for a corrupt criminal organization that has its sights set on world domination. Who better to save the world than a group of street racers? It sounds very much like this is going to explore ideas from the first movie, only with heavily increased stakes.

Netflix has been expanding the scope of their deal with Universal and DreamWorks as of late. They also recently announced a new Jurassic World animated series, in addition to their previous and future collaborations, such as this. While it doesn't seem like the core cast from the movies will be reprising their roles, Vin Diesel is on board as an executive producer alongside Chris Morgan, the primary writer of the franchise. Tim Hedrick (Voltron Legendary Defender) and Bret Haaland (All Hail King Julien) are also on board as executive producers. The duo will also serve as showrunners on the series.

To date, the Fast and Furious movies have grossed a combined $5.1 billion at the global box office, and things have been trending upward ever since Fast Five when Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson joined the franchise. This year, Universal is also set to release the first spin-off in the series, Hobbs & Shaw, which hits theaters in August. Fast & Furious: Spy Racers doesn't yet have a release date set, but it's going to be released on Netflix sometime later this year.
