Southland star Shawn Hatosy has signed on for a recurring role on AMC's The Walking Dead spinoff Fear the Walking Dead. Deadline describes his character as a, "well-intentioned but out of his element military man with a soulful disposition." It isn't known how many episodes he will appear in, but the show already has a two-season pickup, with the six-episode Season 1 debuting in late summer, and the extended Season 2, which will likely span 13 episodes, arriving in 2016.

Shawn Hatosy joins a cast that includes Kim Dickens, Cliff Curtis, Alycia Debnam Carey, Frank Dillane, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Mercedes Masöhn, Rubén Blades and Sandrine Holt. The story takes place in Los Angeles, clear across the country from The Walking Dead survivors on the East Coast, with the spinoff set during the early days of the zombie apocalypse. Series creator Robert Kirkman has teased in the past that Fear the Walking Dead will eventually catch up to The Walking Dead timeline, but it's unclear if these different characters will ever meet, since they are both on opposite ends of the country.

Robert Kirkman co-created the series with Dave Erickson, who serves as showrunner. After his critically-acclaimed performance as Sammy Bryant in Southland, which earned him a Critic's Choice Award nomination in 2011, Shawn Hatosy starred in Reckless and Bosch. He also had a lead role in the CBS pilot For Justice.
