Female Version of ‘The Expendables’ Moves Forward

An all-female version of The Expendables is coming together Producer Adi Shankar is moving forward on an untitled action-thriller in the same vein as this weekend's The Expendables 2, only with an all-female cast.

Screenwriter Dutch Southern has come aboard to write the script. No story details were given, except that it will be inspired by Sylvester Stallone's The Expendables franchise. Adi Shankar will produce through his 1984 Private Defense Contractors company, which is also fully financing the project. The company has financed recent movies such as The Grey, Machine Gun Preacher, Killing Them Softly, and Broken City.

This year has seen a number of female-driven action vehicles, such as Gina Carano's Haywire, Kristen Stewart's Snow White and the Huntsman and Lionsgate's blockbuster adaptation The Hunger Games. It is also worth noting that The Expendables 2 features a female team member, played by Nan Yu.

No production schedule was given. The production company is currently discussing the project with a number of unidentified actresses, although it isn't known if they plan on recruiting a female director as well.

The Expendables was released August 13th, 2010.
