The Forest is shaping up to be one of 2016's scariest movies. Making it even more harrowing is the fact that it is based on a real place. This thriller finds Natalie Dormer going on a very scary trek through Japan's infamous Suicide Forest. Will she make it out alive? Or will the spirits that live their consumer her soul and maker her one of their own? We have the third trailer released over the course of the last few months, and this might be the scariest one yet!

The terrifying Aokigahara Forest, located at the base of Mt. Fuji in Japan, is the suspense-filled setting of the supernatural thriller. The Forest centers on a young American woman, Sara (Natalie Dormer of Game of Thrones and The Hunger Games) journeys there in search of her twin sister, who has mysteriously disappeared. In the company of expatriate Aiden (Taylor Kinney of Chicago Fire), Sara enters the forest having been well warned to "stay on the path."

Determined to discover the truth about her sister's fate, Sara will have to face the angry and tormented souls of the dead that prey on anyone who dares come near them. These malevolent spirits lying in wait for Sara at every turn will plunge her into a frightening darkness from which she must fight to save herself. Stephanie Vogt, James Owen, Yukiyoshi Ozawa, Eoin Macken, Rina Takasaki, Kikuo Ichikawa and Noriko Sakura round out the supporting cast.

Some horror films are based on books, while others are spawned from original ideas. Some of the scariest movies are those based on a true story, or set in a real place. Helping to push the horror home, vThe Forest debuted a new motion poster last week, which takes us inside Natalie Dormer's horrific journey.

The real-life Aokigahara forest, also known as the Suicide Forest, is also the setting of another movie slated for release next year, The Sea of Trees, starring Matthew McConaughey, Ken Watanabe and Naomi Watts. The forest has been associated with demons in Japanese mythology, and has been the site of hundreds of suicides throughout the years. In 2010, it was estimated that more than 200 people tried to take their own lives in the forest, 54 of whom were successful.

The Forest has been given a January 8, 2016 release date, which puts it up against an untitled Blumhouse Pictures horror movie and 20th Century Fox's The Revenant, which expands nationwide on that date after opening in limited release on Christmas Day. Jason Zada (The Houses October Built) directed The Forest from a script by Sarah Cornwell and Nick Antosca. Take a look at the third terrifying teaser, which we've included alongside the motion poster for The Forest. Then prepare to get your wits scared out of you!
