Joseph Gordon-Levitt has signed on to both star in and produce Fraggle Rock: The Movie, nearly three and a half years after New Regency picked up the rights back in October 2011. The project has been in various stages of development for nearly a decade, with The Jim Henson Company first announcing the feature film back in October 2006. We last reported on the adaptation in October 2012, when screenwriters James Ward Byrkit and Alex Manugian signed on to write the screenplay.

It isn't immediately clear what role Joseph Gordon-Levitt will play in Fraggle Rock: The Movie quite yet. The actor will produce alongside The Henson Company's Lisa Henson. Here's what Joseph Gordon-Levitt had to say about Fraggle Rock: The Movie in a statement.

"The first screen personas I ever loved were Henson creations, first on Sesame Street and then on Fraggle Rock. Jim Henson's characters make you laugh and sing, but they're also layered, surprising, and wise. From Oscar the Grouch, to Yoda, to the Fraggles. I've never stopped loving his work, even as a young frisky man, and on into adulthood. Collaborating with Lisa Henson makes me confident we can do something that Jim would have loved. I'm grateful and excited to be working with New Regency on this project."

The Fraggle Rock TV series created by Jim Henson debuted on HBO in 1983 and ran for five seasons. The show followed the Fraggles, cave-dwelling creatures who had to contend with the Doozers and furry giants known as the Gorgs. No story details were given for Fraggle Rock: The Movie at this time, but with Joseph Gordon-Levitt now attached, the project may start to come together quickly. Joseph Gordon-Levitt will next be seen in The Walk, Untitled Christmas Eve Project and Snowden.
