With the final installment of her Resident Evil franchise set for release next year, actress Milla Jovovich is stepping back into the sci-fi world yet again. The actress has signed on to star in Future World, a new post-apocalypstic thriller that is being directed by James Franco. The actor-director is also starring in the movie, although no other cast members have been revealed quite yet.

The story is set in a post-apocalyptic landscape, following a young boy, born into an elite family, who journeys across this wasteland in order to find medicine for his dying mother. Although he isn't even sure if this medicine exists, he sets off with his trusted bodyguard into this dangerous world, which is run by an evil warlord, who has nefarious plans up his sleeve involving a robot assassin disguised as a gorgeous woman. Deadline reports that Milla Jovovich is set to play a drug lord, but no details were given for who James Franco is playing.

James Franco is directing alongside Bruce Thierry Cheung, who directed 2014's The Color of Time. The filmmaker has also directed episodes of the web series Making a Scene with James Franco, and served as the actor-director's cinematographer on his films such as The Sound and the Fury and upcoming movies Zeroville and In Dubious Battle. Bruce Thierry Cheung also co-wrote the script for Future World along with Jay Davis and Jeremy Cheung, based on a story created by James Franco.

Dark Rabbit Productions is producing Future World, with AMBI set to distribute, but no release date has been determined. It isn't known when production will begin at this point, or how many other main roles have yet to be cast. James Franco can currently be seen on the hit Hulu series 11.22.63, and he will also lend his voice to the R-rated animated comedy Sausage Party, which hits theaters this August. The filmmaker/actor is also directing The Masterpiece, currently in post-production, where he stars as director Tommy Wiseau, chronicling the making of his cult classic The Room.

Milla Jovovich recently appeared as Katinka in Paramount's comedy sequel Zoolander 2. Her highly-anticipated Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is set to hit theaters on January 27, 2017, which will bring this beloved cinematic franchise to a close. We'll be sure to keep you posted with more on Future World as soon as more information is available.
