20th Century Fox is currently in production on X-Men: Apocalypse, which is set in 1983 and wraps up the current X-Men trilogy that includes 2011's X-Men: First Class and last year's X-Men: Days of Future Past. Many are wondering what direction the franchise will take after that, with the studio currently developing three more movies set within the X-Men universe, Deadpool (February 2016), Gambit (October 7, 2016) and Wolverine 3 (March 3, 2017). Channing Tatum will star as Gambit, and while it isn't known exactly when production will begin, the actor revealed that the first draft of Joshua Zetumer's script was recently turned in, confirming that it will be an origin story that does have connections to the X-Men franchise.

"Joshua Zetumer just turned in the first draft of the script, and it's killer. None of us were sure how he was going to deal with the X-Men world. But we're going to be changing some of the tropes of these movies. It's always about saving the world (Laughs), but maybe we're going to shift things a liittle but. There's so many ways you can take [an origin story]. You could do it like Batman Begins, or a different take and go the Guardians of the Galaxy route. All I can say is, I'm super excited."

Before the actor was officially confirmed to play Gambit last year, Channing Tatum often spoke about his love for the character in several interviews, since he grew up in the South like the character himself. Here's what he had to say about his connection to Gambit.

"I love Gambit. I grew up in the South; my father's from Loiuisiana. We'd go to New Orleans and I heard all the dialects. It felt so different from the rest of America; it has its own ancient culture. So I identified with that. And he always felt the most real of the X-Men to me. He's kind of a tortured soul and he's not a good guy. But he's not a bad guy, either. He walks his own path. And of course he plays cards and drinks and is a martial-arts badass!"

There have been rumors that Gambit will pop up in next year's X-Men: Apocalypse, but that has yet to be confirmed at this time. Since X-Men: Apocalypse hits theaters on May 27, 2016, just a few months before Gambit debuts in October of next year, it would certainly make sense to introduce the character in X-Men: Apocalypse. However, since the movie is set in the 1980s, and we aren't entirely sure when the Gambit movie is set, it may not work to introduce the character here. While we wait for more confirmed details on Gambit, let us know what you think about these updates below.
