Focus Features and Smokehouse Pictures are planning The Yankee Comandante, with George Clooney in talks to direct.

The project is based on David Grann's article in The New Yorker, which follows the true story of William Alexander Morgan, an American who helped Fidel Castro overthrow Cuban leader Fulgencio Batista. He was later put to death after being uncovered as a covert agent, whose motives were even questioned by his own country.

The actor/director will also produce with his Smokehouse Productions partner Grant Heslov. He most recently directed The Ides of March, and has taken a role in the upcoming Alfonso Cuarón sci-fi thriller Gravity.

This project is still in development.
