Have you ever wanted to see what Matthew McConaughey would look like balding and in a pair of tighty-whities ala Walter White from Breaking Bad? Well, then you should probably check out the trailer for his upcoming movie Gold, which was just released online. Outside of the actor's crazy look in the movie, Gold boasts a stellar cast, a very promising premise, and the first trailer has us thinking this could be an Oscar contender.

Gold is being released by TWC-Dimension, who released the trailer online today. The movie is loosely based on real events and centers on a pair of men, played by Matthew McConaughey and Edgar Ramirez, who venture into the Indonesian jungle in search of gold. They wind up finding an awful lot of it, which leads to a big scandal and an awful lot of money for people to fight over. The movie also features performances from Bryce Dallas Howard, Toby Kebbell and Corey Stoll}.

The trailer is very well cut together and features a lot of shots to take note of, perhaps most notably the shot at the end which features McConaughey touching a tiger. It also takes place in the late 80s and early 90s, so that aesthetic is a really interesting and pretty spot on. There is also quite a few shots of the Indonesian jungle, which are quite gorgeous and expansive. As good as the CGI jungle looked in The Jungle Book, it is pretty hard to beat the real thing.

Outside of his trademark voice, McConaughey is pretty much unrecognizable in this first trailer for Gold, which looks to be his best bet at getting an Oscar nomination this year. The movie also has a prime time Christmas release date, which would seem to tip the odds further in favor of this movie getting some recognition come awards season. It has been a mixed road for McConaughey ever since he took home his Oscar for Dallas Buyers Club a couple of years ago, with a few hits and arguably just as many misses. This year alone he has had two pretty big bombs in the form of Free State of Jones, another movie that looked like it may have had Oscar hopes, and The Sea of Trees, which was lamented by critics and faltered at the box office. On the flip side, he also starred in True Detective, Interstellar and lent his voice for the very well-liked Kubo and the Two Strings.

Gold is the epic tale of one man's pursuit of the American dream, to discover gold. Starring Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey as Kenny Wells, a prospector desperate for a lucky break, he teams up with a similarly eager geologist and sets off on an amazing journey to find gold in the uncharted jungle of Indonesia. Getting the gold was hard, but keeping it would be even harder, sparking an adventure through the most powerful boardrooms of Wall Street. The film is inspired by a true story.

Gold is directed by Stephen Gaghan, who previously directed Syriana and wrote the drug trade movie Traffic. The script was written by Patrick Massett & John Zinman, who are also producing along with McConaughey. Gold is set to hit theaters on Christmas Day in the U.S. Be sure to watch the trailer for yourself below.
