Homeland star Morena Baccarin has signed on for a recurring role in the new Fox series Gotham, as the Dr. Leslie Thompkins.

Dr. Leslie Thompkins made her DC Comics debut in 1976 issue "Detective Comics #457," and she is also featured in the New 52 comic reboot Red Hood and the Outlaws during flashback sequences.

In the series, Thompkins is described as a "gifted and dedicated physician" who was friends with Bruce's (David Mazouz) late parents Thomas and Martha. She decides to put her medical expertise to good use by working at the newly-opened Arkham Asylum's Home for the Criminally Insane. She will also be drawn to Ben McKenzie's James Gordon and into more dangerous territory.

The actress will recur in Season 1, with her character debuting in early 2015, and she is slated to become a series regular if the show is picked up for Season 2. The show's producers teased at New York Comic Con earlier this month that Thompkins will be one of several new characters from the DC Comics who will be coming to Gotham, including Tommy "Hush" Elliot.

Here's what Danny Cannon had this to say about how Thompkins will be introduced.

"Without giving too much away, Jim Gordon gets to meet her through strange circumstances and... oh my God, I'm giving it away. It's a very tough time in Jim's life, and he meets Leslie Thompkins."

It's possible that the "tough time" in Jim's life could mean that he and his fiancee Barbara Kean (Erin Richards) will be splitting up in the near future, but that hasn't been confirmed.

The role marks a return to Fox for Morena Baccarin, whose breakout role came in the network's cult classic series Firefly. The actress is also no stranger to the Batman universe, voicing Tali al Ghul in the Warner Bros. animated adventure Son of Batman.
