Many have wondered how Marvel is going to slide their Guardians of the Galaxy franchise in with the rest of the cinematic universe. And while the cosmic side of this world will expand with Captain Marvel and Inhumans, both arriving in 2018, we don't yet have an explanation as to how Star-Lord and his pals are going to first meet Marvel's The Avengers. With the announcement of Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 and Avengers: Infinity War Part 2, which will close out the Phase 3 slate and include the big bad villain Thanos, many believe that Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will set up and introduce this particular story line. Continuing to promote the release of Guardians of the Galaxy on Blu-ray and DVD this December, director James Gunn says this isn't true at all.

Speaking with MTV, Gunn explains that his franchise is able to stand on its own, and is not reliant on the epic ensemble that will include most of the Marvel universe of characters in some capacity before it's all done with Avengers: Infinity War.

"I don't feel beholden to that stuff at all. I think it's really about the Guardians and what they are doing. We're not subservient to the Avengers. 'Guardians 2' is not a movie that's made to move toward 'Infinity War.' It's something that's made to move toward future cosmic movies, so I don't feel that that is something that affects me that much."

In an interview from this past August, during the time of Guardians of the Galaxy's initial release in theaters, James Gunn did tease the possibility that the Avengers and Guardians would eventually mingle and coexist.

"[We've] talked about all sorts of possibilities for a crossover...What the basic plan is...It could always change at any minute...That could or could not include a couple of Avengers and a couple of Guardians meeting up, or all of the Avengers and all of the Guardians. But, we do inhabit the same universe and they're pretty big personalities that are likely to, at some point or another, run into each other."

Right now, it sounds like Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will be it's own thing, but we will likely get an introduction to either Captain Marvel, Inhumans, or both. And with Captain Marvel also rumored to be making an appearance at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron, she could very well be the one character that ties everything together.
