Last month, star Chris Pratt wrapped production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, announcing in a new video from the set that both he and director James Gunn would be coming to Comic-Con this year. The director went on to confirm through social media that the first footage would be shown during Marvel Studios' Hall H panel that took place tonight, and sure enough, the filmmaker is a man of his word and did indeed showcase footage from this sequel. What fans didn't expect is that this footage confirmed a long-running rumor, that Kurt Russell is in fact portraying Star-Lord's (Chris Pratt) father, Ego.
Entertainment Weekly reveals that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige introduced James Gunn, who called the Hall H crowd, "the petri dish where Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 was born!" His speech was interrupted by The Ravagers, lead by Taserface (Chris Sullivan), who continually mocked the director and the stars as they were brought out onto the stage. Chris Pratt (Peter Quill), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Michael Rooker (Yondu) and new additions Kurt Russell (Ego), Pom Klementieff (Mantis) and Elizabeth Debicki (Ayesha), who presented the first footage from the sequel.
The footage features the Ravagers wreaking havoc when they come across Baby Groot, who Taserface determines too adorable to kill. Another scene features Yondu sporting a new orange mohawk as he enters the Ravagers' lair and destroys them all. The final clip revealed Rocket Raccoon hurling insults at several different characters along with the entire team bickering, before the footage revealed Sylvester Stallone, although it wasn't revealed who he is playing. Some believe that, judging by his outfit, he could be another Ravager but it isn't known for sure. The end of the clip features a giant space pod landing, with Kurt Russell exiting the pod. When Star-Lord asks, "Who the hell are you," Kurt Russell's character Ego had this to say.
"I thought my good looks would make it obvious. My name is Ego. And I'm your dad."
There had previously been speculation that the comic book character Ego the Living Planet would be featured in this sequel, and there were also rumors that Kurt Russell is playing Star-Lord's dad. However, no one could have guessed that both Ego was Star-Lord's dad, and that Kurt Russell would play Ego, who is portrayed in the comics as a large, living planet. The footage revealed that Ego designed a human form for himself, which lead Drax to ask if that human form includes a penis, which apparently it does.
Marvel didn't release any of this footage online after the panel, like they did with the new Doctor Strange trailer earlier today, so we'll have to wait and see if the studio plans on releasing these revealing scenes anytime soon. The studio did reveal a new logo for this upcoming sequel, arriving in theaters May 5, 2017, which you can check out below. We'll be sure to keep you posted with more on this superhero follow-up as soon as more details are revealed.
