Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was among the most talked-about movies at Comic-Con last month, with the first trailer revealing one of the sequel's biggest secrets, that Star-Lord's father (Chris Pratt) is Ego the Living Planet (Kurt Russell). There are still plenty of other secrets to be uncovered as we continue the countdown towards the May 5, 2017 release, including the identity of Sylvester Stallone's character, what will be featured in the mysterious post credit scene and more. Today, director James Gunn has offered up a new mystery for fans to dissect, teasing that there almost was another new character who joined the Guardians team.

As he often does, James Gunn hosted a Facebook Q&A over the weekend, where a fan asked if there were any characters from the Marvel Comics that he wanted to include in the movie, but simply didn't make the cut. The filmmaker teased that there was almost another Guardian in this story, but this character was scrapped, with Mantis (Pom Klementieff) staying put. Here's what he had to say.

"Yes. In my initial treatment I had a whole other Guardian involved. I loved the character and loved including him/her, and thought my take was fun. But I started to feel that there were two many characters in the story and for all of the characters to get their due, I needed to remove one. So this character left, and Mantis stayed.

Naturally, he would not reveal who this character is, and we likely won't know until after Guardians 2 hits theaters next May. This sequel will be the third movie in Marvel's Phase 3 lineup, which is building up to the release of Avengers: Infinity War, which starts production towards the end of this year. The filmmaker was also asked which Avenger he would like to include in this sequel, if he had the chance, and the director issued an interesting response.

"If I could? I could and I choose not to."

The filmmaker also teased that there isn't much collaboration on the "story-building end," when it comes to the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. He did add that he gave his script for Guaridans of the Galaxy 2 to the Russo Brothers and screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, in case his story "affected anything they were doing." The directed added that he has read and given notes on many of the "recent Marvel scripts" and that he has the script for Thor: Ragnarok on his desk right now. He also teased that the reveal of Ego "fits together" with Meredith Quill's story and Peter's story with Yondu. Check out the full Q&A on Facebook, and stay tuned for more on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, hitting theaters May 5, 2017.
