Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn took a break from writing the Guardians of the Galaxy 2 script to hold a Twitter Q&A session on Saturday, where he revealed that his highly-anticipated sequel will introduce his favorite Marvel character. Naturally, the filmmaker wouldn't state who this character will be, but he has already revealed that the sequel will include more female characters. We also know this superhero follow-up will solve the mystery of who Star-Lord's (Chris Pratt) father is, and it will be different from the Marvel comics. So, who could this new character be?

There are already a few characters we can eliminate from contention, just from this Q&A alone. The filmmaker said later in the Q&A that it won't be Winger, and it also won't be ROM the Spaceknight, since Marvel doesn't have the rights to the character. ROM wasn't created by Marvel, but it was licensed from Parker Brothers, who had acquired the character from its original creators. Marvel ran a 75-issue comic book series until the rights reverted back to Parker Brothers in 1986. ROM was part of the Galadorian Spaceknights, cyborgs created on Galador to protect their planet from the Dire Knights. ROM did pop up in a 2013 Marvel Comics Age of Ultron crossover event, but it hasn't been publicly announced if the studio ever got the rights to ROM back for use in a new movie. While Marvel does own the Spaceknights, they do not own ROM, making it unlikely that he will pop up in Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

Other characters we can cross off the list are Carol Danvers, a.k.a. Captain Marvel, who is getting her own Marvel Phase Three movie in 2018, since James Gunn has said he doesn't want other Earth-bound characters in the sequel. Another character James Gunn has mentioned in the past is Bug, but like ROM, Marvel does not own this character. The filmmaker has said that he wanted to use Bug in the first Guardians of the Galaxy, but Marvel said that he could not. The director has also ruled out bringing Nova Prime into the sequel in past interviews.

So then, who could this mystery character be? One of the possibilities is Adam Warlock, since we saw his cocoon in the first Guardians of the Galaxy. This character has had connections to Thanos in the Marvel comics, and it wouldn't make sense to show his cocoon in the first movie without introducing him in the second. Mantis, Moondragon and Phyla-Vell are also possibilities, since they had large roles in the 2008-2010 comic books that the first movie was based on. Moondragon is the daughter of Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), who was long thought to be dead, and both Mantis and Phyla-Vell have connections to the Guardians in the comics that could be explored in the sequel. Who do you think it will be? Whoever it is, James Gunn added that the actor he would most like to work with is Al Pacino, who actually met with Marvel to discuss a mystery role back in December. Take a look at James Gunn's tweets below, and chime in with your thoughts.
