Next year is going to be jam packed with plenty of things for Marvel fans to enjoy. Not only are we getting to see Thor and Hulk team up in Thor: Ragnarok, as well as Spider-Man: Homecoming, but we are also getting the highly-anticipated follow up to James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy. We are all still waiting for Marvel Studios to release the trailer that was shown at San Diego Comic-Con, but in the meantime, we can enjoy a brand new piece of concept art from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

The art was revealed by Empire and features the Guardians doing battle. In short, it is way awesome. The centerpiece of the new image is a brand new, as-of-yet unnamed space monster, which has a lot of random tentacles, pinkish-red hair, many rows of very sharp teeth, and it is big. Very, very big. Attacking from the right side is Star-Lord, making use of his blasters, and Drax, who is diving right at the creature with his double blades. On the left Gamora and Rocket are taking on the monster with very large blasters, and the ever-adorable baby Groot is facing away from the beast, looking quite frightened.

As far as we can tell, this new creature featured in the concept art is an original creation, and not something significant that can be traced back to the comics. Granted, Gunn is known to pull some pretty obscure stuff from the Marvel Comics canon (like Taserface), so it could very well be based on a lesser known creature, but it seems like a new type of creature created for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. We also know that Star Wars heavily influenced the first Guardians of the Galaxy, and this creature seems to have taken a few clues from Star Wars creature design, like the Sarlacc and the Rancor.

We do know that the Guardians of the Galaxy will be getting some new team members in the sequel, and those team members are noticeably absent from this new image. Mantis, who is being played by Pom Klementieff, is not featured doing battle with this particular beast, but we do know for sure she will be doing battle with Groot and the gang at some point. We also know that Yandu and Nebula will be teaming up with the Guardians at some point in Vol. 2, but apparently not to take down this imposing creature.

That's ok, because we also know that this crazy monster won't be the main villain of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Elizabeth Debicki gets that honor, as she is playing the character of Ayesha. According to the article, she is out for vengeance after the Guardians encounter her early in the movie, and she will reportedly have an army to help her out. Also, they will have to contend with the Ravagers, who are shaking things up, as they apparently aren't very happy with Yandu. Here is what James Gunn had to say about it.

"There's a mutiny and Taserface (Chris Sullivan) is a character that leads that."

We still don't know a whole lot about the specific plot details for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but with each new bit of information, the picture is becoming a bit more clear. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is set for release on May 5, 2017. Be sure to check out the brand new piece of concept art from the movie for yourself below.
