Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones, Conan the Barbarian, Bullet to the Head) is in negotiations to play Drax the Destroyer in Marvel's Phase II ensemble Guardians of the Galaxy. We reported earlier this month that Parks and Recreation star Chris Pratt is playing Peter Quill a.k.a. Star-Lord.
Jason Momoa flew out to London on Wednesday to screen test for the role, with Marvel offering him the part shortly thereafter. The actor beat out others such as Isaiah Mustafa, Dave Bautista, and Brian Patrick for the part.
Drax the Destroyer was born as the human Arthur Douglas, whose family was attacked and murdered by the villainous Thanos. Arthur's spirit was then placed into a powerful new body by Kronos, which resulted in Drax the Destroyer's creation. The superhero's powers include incredible strength and the ability to emit energy blasts from his hands. The character first appeared in the Marvel comic books in a 1973 issue of Iron Man. He became a part of the Guardians of the Galaxy team during Marvel's 2004 re-launch of the property.
James Gunn is directing from his own screenplay. It isn't known when production will begin on this highly-anticipated Marvel Phase II adventure.
