For years, we've been threatened with a Highlander remake. And while it could be fun on some levels, it could also be another giant reboot stinker. If you're against another lame redo, but still want to bask in new Highlander material, IDW has you covered. They are set to release an all-new prequel comic that ties directly into the 1986 classic.

Yes, there can only be one Highlander prequel comic! And it will explore the origins of the Highlander. The movie, though not considered a box office success, quickly became a cult classic thanks to the advent of VHS at the time of its release. It starred Christipher Lambert and Sean Connery, and even spawned a very popular spin-off TV series that ran for quite a long time in syndication.

Highlander will expand its legacy next year as a comic-book miniseries from IDW Publishing. Scottish fantasy writer Brian Ruckley will spin a new tale chronicling the events that led up to the opening of the classic 1986 feature film while casting new light on the battle between immortals throughout time. Senior editor Denton J. Tipton said this about the impending release.

"In the 30 years since its release, Highlander has inspired a massive cult following that craves new stories based on the original film. Many have tried, to varying degrees of success, but Brian has crafted an exciting narrative that will honor and bolster the underpinnings of Highlander. Also, epic sword fights!"

Brent Marlis, licensing agent at Creative Licensing, expressed his sentiments.

"We are thrilled for this partnership with IDW, as they have a tremendously talented team who will be creating a story that is both authentic to the original Highlander film and innovative to attract new fans alike."

Joined by artist Andrea Mutti (Rebels), Ruckley will explore Connor MacLeod's journey, both physical and internal, that led him to become humanity's immortal champion. From medieval Scotland to Civil War-era Pennsylvania to mid-century Manhattan, readers will meet compelling new characters, such as immortal Osta Vazilek, and revisit fan favorites. The battle for The Prize begins anew in February! Take a look at the first cover here courtesy of IDW.
