Back in January 2011, shortly after the Sundance debut of Red State, director Kevin Smith stated that Hit Somebody would be his final film as a director. The story is based on a Warren Zevon song, centering on a Canadian who long dreamed of becoming a hockey player, despite lacking the skills needed to play. In the four years that followed, plans for the film have changed drastically, and Kevin Smith moved onto a number of other projects with no actual end in sight for his directing career. Now it sounds like the project will actually shoot in the later half of 2015, but it will no longer be his final film as far as we can tell.

The filmmaker announced in August 2011 that the project would be a two-part movie, before it then turned back into one movie in January 2012. Next, the director announced it would become a mini-series in December 2012. We haven't heard anything else about the project since then. But, while promoting the Blu-ray and DVD release of his thriller Tusk, Kevin Smith revealed that he has financing secured for Hit Somebody, which will shoot in Canada and Michigan in the fall of 2015. Here's what he had to say about a conversation with Kim Ledford, who runs the production company Star Stream, which helped secure funding for Hit Somebody.

"So we were having this conversation about fake Canada that I keep setting the movies in now for this True North Trilogy. And Kim, her former boss, he used to work tangentially in the world of the NHL (National Hockey League). Howard Baldwin I believe was her former boss. So, you know, she knows a lot about the world of hockey, particularly the WHA (World Hockey Association). And I was like 'Oh my Lord, I have written this mini-series that we were planning to do with CBC up in Canada. That, you know, I've been sitting on for a while.' I said, 'You would love to read it, just because it's set in the world that you know very well.' And then when I was all over, she was like 'Wow, we're making this right now.' And so we have two meetings and we met with our Canadian counterparts, 'cause we're gonna shoot up a lot of it up North and then some of it in Michigan as well. But we were able to kind of pull the budget together. So in the fall of 2015, we head up to it looks like Northern Ontario and start shooting Hit Somebody."

The Hit Somebody shoot will come after Yoga Hosers, which stars Johnny Depp and will be wrapping up principal photography in the next few days, and the long-awaited Clerks III, which will shoot earlier next year. The filmmaker revealed in the interview with /Film that making Tusk helped him secure financing for Yoga Hosers, Clerks III, Hit Somebody and another project entitled Moose Jaw, which is the final installment of his True North trilogy alongside Tusk and Yoga Hosers.
