According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment announced that House of Flying Daggers will be the first movie released simultaneously on DVD and the new Universal Media Disc format. SPHE also disclosed UMD pricing for the first time.
Both options go on sale April 19th for a suggested list price of $28.95. The company additionally revealed that previously announced UMD catalog titles XXX, Hellboy, Resident Evil 2 and Once Upon a Time in Mexico will debut that same day at $19.95.
No other studio has committed to releasing movies on UMD yet, though Sony is in discussions with all of the majors. The UMD is the optical disc format used by Sony's new PSP hand-held gaming and multimedia player. At 60mm across, a UMD is about half the diameter of a DVD, but it can store up to 1.8 GB -- ample room for a feature film encoded using advanced AVC compression.
Additionally, movies on UMD are produced in 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio.
