Even though (SPOILER ALERT) both Will Smith and his dog died during the epic climax of I Am Legend, Warner Bros. was desperate to get a sequel off the ground due to the movie's overwhelming success. And they went to some pretty insane lengths to justify a story. Sadly, I Am Legend 2 never got off the ground and languished in development Hell for a long period before all involved walked away empty handed. Now, writer/producer Akiva Goldsman has revealed what some of those crazy ideas were.

Akiva Goldsman is out promoting his directorial feature Winter's Tale, which is in theaters this week just in time for Valentine's Day, and he was happy to share some of his failed script ideas for I Am Legend 2 with io9.

Here, he explains how they wrote both a prequel, which involves the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, and a sequel. He also mentions a Dark Seeker Elephant, which sounds pretty cool.

"[There was] never a movie. I mean, we wrote a prequel [and] a sequel. We had a really interesting prequel, which was the first outbreak of the virus, during a Thanksgiving Day parade, which was awesome. We did a really interesting prequel that [took place] later. Which was right after the first... really right when the population of humans became pretty decimated. And it was this sort of trek to Washington. Which included a dark seeker elephant that had broken out of the zoo.

Then we did a sequel, that started with Neville again - and you realized that he was cloned. We've tried every which way. In fact if you're available you could be in the next movie. It will never happen but we really enjoyed trying to make it happen.

There were scripts. We really tried."

I Am Legend opened number one at the box office December 14, pulling in $77 million before going onto make $256.3 million domestically and $585 million worldwide. You can understand why the studio would be so desperate for a sequel. Since I Am Legend 2 won't happen, we're almost all but guaranteed we'll get a reboot sometime in the very near future. Who do you want to see replace Will Smith? Jaden Smith? Danny McBride? A combination of the two?
