Fresh off her role in the breakout indie horror hit It Follows, Maika Monroe has joined Independence Day 2. Director Roland Emmerich announced the news via his Twitter this afternoon. At this time, it is not known who Maika Monroe will be playing. The actress also turned heads in the recent thriller The Guest and has a starring role in the upcoming alien apocalypse adventure The 5th Wave.

Last week, Roland Emmerich announced that original ID4 star Bill Pullman is returning to play former POTUS Thomas J. Whitmore, along with fan-favorite icon Judd Hirsch, who will reprise his role as Julius Levinson, the cantankerous father of Jeff Goldblum's David Levinson. Jeff Goldblum was confirmed for the sequel after much speculation earlier this year. Both actors join a cast that includes newcomers Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Travis Tope and Joey King. Vivica A. Fox and Brent Spiner will also reprise their roles from the original blockbuster hit.

Independence Day 2 will arrive just in time for the July 4th holiday when it opens on June 24th next year, with a story set 20 years after the first aliens attacked the world. Shooting is set to start in May with a script from Carter Blanchard. Previous drafts were done by Emmerich and Dean Devlin, and then by James Vanderbilt. It's not immediately clear how many more major roles are left to be filled, but Roland Emmerich will surely let us know as soon as they are cast.
