This summer, the sci-fi action classic Independence Day celebrates its 20th Anniversary. The movie went on to become a huge success, taking in $306.1 million domestically, which, when adjusted for inflation, equates to a $594.3 million movie today. Part of this classic's anniversary celebration is the release of its long-awaited sequel, Independence Day: Resurgence, which has debuted an extended 5-minute trailer with plenty of new footage.

This trailer, which comes from the 20th Century Fox UK YouTube page, shows why the alien invaders returned to Earth two decades later, and glimpses of new characters portrayed by Liam Hemsworth and Jessie Usher, along with plenty of familiar faces like Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum. This footage includes a pivotal scene where Bill Pullman's Whitmore, the former President of the U.S., sacrifices himself in order to get some answers from the aliens captured 20 years ago. If that isn't enough, we have new photos from Empire Magazine, including the subscriber's cover that features one of the aliens these characters will be going up against.

From director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin, 1996's Independence Day shattered opening weekend and total box office records, becoming the year's top-grossing film. It also became the first movie in history to gross over $500 million internationally. But Independence Day was just the beginning. We always knew they were coming back. After that film redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter in the Independence Day universe delivers a global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens' advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.

Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox and Brent Spiner all reprise their roles from the original 1996 blockbuster. New additions to the cast for Independence Day: Resurgence include Liam Hemsworth, Angelababy, Maika Monroe, Sela Ward and Jessie Usher. This highly-anticipated sequel will make summer 2016 one to remember when it explodes onto screens worldwide June 24. The movie will square off against STX Entertainment's The Free State of Jones when it hits theaters almost exactly one month from today.

In addition to the trailer and photos, we also have a new TV spot from Resurgence, which is shaping up to be just as big as its predecessor at the box office. We'll have to wait and see how much more footage is released as we get closer and closer to this highly-anticipated sequel's release. Until then, take a look at the extended trailer, TV spot, photos and Empire Magazine cover below.
