This year marks the 20th Anniversary of the 1996 blockbuster Independence Day, which will be celebrated with the release of 20th Century Fox's long-awaited sequel Independence Day: Resurgence, in theaters June 24. Way back in December, the studio launched a viral campaign that explained what happened to Will Smith's character Stephen Hiller, with the studio continually releasing new videos from the Earth Space Defense (ESD), to get fans ready for the sequel. Today, a new video has surfaced, which debunks a conspiracy that has lasted for 20 years.

Today Earth Space Defense director David Levinson is finally debunking a long-standing conspiracy theory that has persisted since the War of 1996. In this video - which provides irrefutable proof - he and famous Hollywood actor Jeff Goldblum prove once and for all that they are not the same person - despite their uncanny resemblance. This humorous video, courtesy of YouTube, shows both Levinson and Goldblum standing side by side, as they awkwardly get to know one another. Of course, this video is just a parody, but at least it shows that Jeff Goldblum is certainly a good sport about participating in viral campaigns. Now, we want Goldblum's backstory explained. Where was he in 1996? And how did he survive?

We always knew they were coming back. After Independence Day redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens' advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.

For those who want to revisit the War of 1996 on the big screen, we reported last week that 20th Century Fox is holding double feature screenings with both the original Independence Day and Independence Day: Resurgence on Thursday, June 23. Fans will get to see the original 1996 classic at 5 PM local time, with Independence Day: Resurgence showing at 8 PM. The original Independence Day was the first movie in box office history to break $500 million worldwide, so we'll have to see how well it's predecessor does in theaters.

Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox and Brent Spiner all reprise their roles from the original 1996 blockbuster. New additions to the cast for Independence Day: Resurgence include Liam Hemsworth, Angelababy, Maika Monroe, Sela Ward and Jessie Usher. This highly-anticipated sequel will make summer 2016 one to remember when it explodes onto screens worldwide June 24. The movie will square off against STX Entertainment's The Free State of Jones when it hits theaters in just a few short weeks. Take a look at this new viral video which puts an end to the David Levinson/Jeff Goldblum conspiracy theory.
