This summer marks the 20th Anniversary of the sci-fi action classic Independence Day, which helped take Will Smith's movie career to the next level. 20th Century Fox is celebrating this milestone by releasing the long-awaited sequel Independence Day: Resurgence, arriving in theaters June 24. Unfortunately, Will Smith doesn't reprise his role as Captain Stephen Hiller, but one original cast member coming back is Jeff Goldblum as David Levinson. A new viral video has surfaced that helps fill in the two-decade gap between the two movies, and it seems Levinson has been keeping quite busy.

The video surfaced from the new viral website WarOf1996.com, which offers a comprehensive timeline for the events that followed the war with the aliens, which has been dubbed the War of 1996. Jeff Goldblum's David Levinson helped lead the Earth Space Defense, in the aftermath of this war, and he's seen in this video discussing how the ESD has helped protect the world since then. Here's what he had to say below.

"The ESD has been an international collaborative grand effort and our main goal, of course, is to keep us safe. I've taken a leadership role in developing many aspects of this defense system. As you know, it's taken a huge effort to get a big military base on the moon, and these orbiting units, which have a big punch to them."

The video, which is formatted as a special report from "United World News," also gives us a glimpse at ESD Moon Base Commander Jiang Lao (Chin Han), who discusses the technological advancements on their base. They even have a replication of the main weapon used by the original ships in Independence Day, which had the power to destroy entire cities. We also hear from Captain Dylan Hiller (Jessie Usher), Lieutenant Rain Lao (Angelababy), and Jake Morrison (Liam Hemsworth).

From director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin, 1996's Independence Day shattered opening weekend and total box office records, becoming the year's top-grossing film. It also became the first movie in history to gross over $500 million internationally. But Independence Day was just the beginning. We always knew they were coming back.

After that film redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter in the Independence Day universe delivers a global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens' advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction. Take a look at this new viral video, and stay tuned for more from Independence Day: Resurgence.
