In just a few short days, the aliens will return to wipe out humanity in 20th Century Fox's upcoming sequel Independence Day: Resurgence. Set 20 years after the original blockbuster Independence Day, this follow-up brings some of your favorite characters from the original back, along with a host of new faces trying to save the world as we know it. While we wait for the June 24 release date, 20th Century Fox has debuted a new clip, while director Roland Emmerich discusses the possibility of a sequel.

The clip, which surfaced on YouTube today, offers a new look at one of the returning Independence Day stars, Brent Spiner as Dr. Brackish Okun. The good doctor is unveiling what he calls the "Okun laser," which he built back in 1994 and is now trying to use to cut open one of the alien ships. If that wasn't enough, we also have a new TV spot and a poster for this sequel below.

At one point during Independence Day 2's lengthy development process, there was talk that director Roland Emmerich was planning on shooting two sequels back-to-back. While that plan was scrapped, the filmmaker recently spoke with Empire, where he teased that this movie is setting up potential sequels, although he doesn't expect fans will have to wait another 20 years for that to happen.

"If it's successful enough, yes, because it's set up for a sequel. In 20 years? No, I wouldn't want to make it with a Zimmer frame!"

We always knew they were coming back. After Independence Day redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens' advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.

Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox and Brent Spiner all reprise their roles from the original 1996 blockbuster. New additions to the cast for Independence Day: Resurgence include Liam Hemsworth, Angelababy, Maika Monroe, Sela Ward and Jessie Usher. This highly-anticipated sequel will make summer 2016 one to remember when it explodes onto screens worldwide June 24. The movie will square off against STX Entertainment's The Free State of Jones when it hits theaters in just a few short weeks. Take a look at the clip, TV spot and poster below, as we get closer to this sequel's release.
