‘Independence Day 2’ to Feature Will Smith as President?

Will Smith may be the President in Independence Day 2 We have known since last November that two back-to-back Independence Day sequels were being planned, although we haven't had much information on the story for either Independence Day 2 or Independence Day 3. MTV Movies Blog spoke with director Roland Emmerich, who dropped a big hint that Will Smith may be the President of the United States in the sequels. Here's an excerpt from their interview:

"It's an alternate reality kind of movie. We pick up the story, what would have happened after this kind of attack? Naturally, the alien technology has changed everything."

Did they rebuild the White House? Who will be president?

"Or, who will be president? Who Will be president? See?"

We also reported back in March that Will Smith was locked in to star in both movies and that they could start shooting early next year.

We'll be sure to keep you posted with any further details on Independence Day 2 and Independence Day 3 as soon as we have more information.

Independence Day 2 comes to theaters June 24th, 2016.

ID Forever - Part 2 is in development .

So what's the title going to be then ID4-2 and ID4-3? Wish these muppets would decide before hand that they may make a sequel and not stick all their eggs in one basket. Showing the mother ship so that you think 'Oh the saucers are the smaaaallll ones look at this big fat one' But then it gets stupid because in ID4-2, the big fat one will obviously be just a small one in comparison too what's coming next and in ID4-3 Gueeeessssss what etc etc bland bland etc.

Hate nonsense like that. Someone being smart to the point of stupid even in my favs. Kyle Reese 'Nothing Dead will go, something to do with the field generated by a living organism!' So explain how the T1000 gets through, Oh you can't..........all together now ' I DIDN'T BUILD THE F*CKING THING!'

Emmerich's films are always pants and brainless. How he compared 10,000BC with its artistic licence chronology up against Apocolypto is beyond anyone. Universal Soldier was his best effort despite his gratuitous JCVD arse shot where he dropped his strides, that didn't really have to happen once let alone twice.

This is better than Roland making 10 000 BC 2. that movie sucked donkey balls!! ID4 is one of my favourite movies, and will smith is one of my favourite actors.. so go for it.. just make it good,.. and big... and please... go to another planet!!

Yeah, I'm sorry about that @Iron Fist. I didn't mean "argument" in any negative way. I just meant that you confused me with what counted and why, that's all.

How can he top "ID4"? It was too '90s, thus great, and his greatest considering his lackluster effects laden flicks. I hope this doesn't turn out to be a complete 3D effects house of crap.

Soon they may even start putting female presidents in movies. They tried to dabble in that in the axed series FlashFoward.

I'm not arguing. Just stating, somebody happened to respond.

Seems like a pretty pointless argument. Who cares what the presidents look like in tv shows and movies, their all f*cking humans in the end. People and their pettiness, I swear.

Wait ,I don't get the premise for your argument. The fact that at least two examples of black presidents before Obama's election indicate that the studio's were trending that way at least some of the time. Haysbert and Freeman being cast as presidents demonstrate how Hollywood was moving towards a more inclusive place, as also evidenced by woman in power(Cherry Jones as President Taylor in 24, and Geena Davis in the short-lived Commander-In-Chief are prime examples). I don't think it has as much to do with Obama's election as it does Hollywood stretching it's creative wings, or at least trying to do so.

Well, I don't watch 24 but thanks for telling me. He, along with Morgan Freeman don't count. I'm talking about how casting black actors for the role of presidents are a becoming a trend since Barack Obama was elected. Thanks for letting me know though.

Hey I thought 2012 was good stupid fun (mostly due to Woody Harrelson's cameo). I get a kick out of watching the world get destroyed. There doesn't have to be a lot of brains involved with that.

And the Allstate guy aka Mr. President aka Dennis Haysbert rocked in 24.

@Iron Fist, Dennis Haysbert played a black president, in 24, before anyone outside of Chicago heard of Obama. He is considered to be by far the best president from that show, as well.

Will Smith should stay away from this, look at what Emmerich did with 10,000 BC and 2012, they were just the most stupid films i have ever seen. CGI doesn't make a movie, the story, the script, the screenplay, that's what makes a movie god damn it. I'm not a director or a producer and i know this. Why doesn't he know this ?

ID2: the search of Randy Quaid

  • solarxi • 5 years ago

@Bane 5000: It's not speaking ill, I'm stating what I see. Did it take an actual Presidential election to cast black men or women as the President in movies or TV? Morgan Freeman in Deep Impact doesn't count. This is partially because Will Smith is the front runner to play Barack Obama in a biopic. Will Smith is locked in for the sequels, obviously it isn't for the paycheck, unless he wants to go back to his early film days. What does this mean for Men In Black III or Bad Boys III?

With this franchise what are they going to do next, resurrect Randy Quaid?

i think making this a franchise is a bad idea. these ideas sound better than him being an intergalactic fighter pilot and declaring war on all aliens, but i'm with @jasonkat .... i think this idea, generally speaking, is lame.

This is LAME. Steven hiller will just go on his honeymoon w his stripper wife Jasmine, and son.. David would prob get sum kinda goverment job since he knows so much about technology. by the way he will reunite w his ex. Thomas J. would just remain PRESIDENT. . depending on what time this is taking place, but it will NOT be (will smith). whoever thinks so, is prob high. THE MOTHER SHIP WAS WIPED OUT.

This Independence Day sequels are kinda like The Matrix! they were made because of the success of the 1st film!

Wow....everything I am reading about upcoming movies lately is just really pissing me off. I literally hate The Big Six... the studio system used to be an illegal monopoly and I still think it has continued to this day.
