As the summer movie season winds to a halt, so are the crews on next year's blockbuster summer releases. On Saturday, Marvel co-president Louis D'Esposito announced that Captain America: Civil War had officially wrapped production. Then yesterday, we got word from director Bryan Singer that first unit production on X-Men: Apocalypse had finished shooting. Now, we have word that Independence Day: Resurgence is officially in the can. Director Roland Emmerich broke the news via his personal instagram, sharing a photo of a double rainbow from the set in New Mexico.

"And that's a wrap on Independence Day Resurgence. Thank you, Albuquerque, New Mexico, you've been amazing. #IDR #NewMexicoTRUE."

Production on Independence Day 2 got underway in late May, shooting on location in Albuquerque. The cast and crew of Independence Day 2 gathered for a live stream Q&A session on June 22, where director Roland Emmerich revealed the official title, Independence Day: Resurgence. A new vehicle called the Moon Tug was also revealed, along with an alien hybrid jet. We also got this official synopsis for the movie.

"We always knew they were coming back. After Independence Day redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens' advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction."

20th Century Fox has previously released a motion poster with the new title, along with two versions of the logo and more information about the space vehicle known as the Moon Tug. Director Roland Emmerich described the Moon Tug as a "workhorse" and the main vehicle of newcomer Liam Hemsworth. While the alien hybrid jet will also be put on display in the movie, we haven't gotten our first look at that piece of hardware yet. Here's what the filmmaker had to say about this new war vehicle.

"It has the same technology, anti-gravity engines. This world cannot build alien technology, but we can harvest it."

Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox and Brent Spiner all return from the original 1996 blockbuster hit Independence Day. New additions to the cast include Liam Hemsworth,Angelababy, Maika Monroe, Sela Ward and Jessie Usher. This highly-anticipated sequel will make summer 2016 one to remember when it explodes onto screens worldwide June 24. Since production has wrapped, hopefully we'll get our first real look at Independence Day 2 in the near future. Seriously? How long do we have to wait for the Independence Day: Resurgence trailer to drop? The speculators are speculating that we'll see it on or near September 18, as 20th Century Fox premieres the anticipated sequel The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials in theaters everywhere. Who's excited?
