‘Iron Man 3’ Reveals Connection to Another Marvel Phase II Movie

Marvel Studios is gearing up to unleash Phase II of its multi-franchise plan with Iron Man 3 this summer, featuring the return of Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark. Since all of the Phase I movies teased the formation of Marvel's The Avengers, many are wondering what future glimpses at Marvel's Phase II fans will get in Iron Man 3. Without being very specific, Robert Downey Jr. teased possible appearances of Phase II characters in a recent interview. Be warned, there may be heavy spoilers for Iron Man 3 throughout the remainder of this article, so read on at your own risk.

"Everywhere you look now in every Marvel movie there are opportunities where certain new pals of his (Tony's) could be useful. So they're in the atmosphere, so to speak, but I wouldn't expect to see them on the ground in this one."

At relatively the same time, the toy company Funko released the following photo of one of their Pop! Vinyl figures for Iron Man 3, which features Tony Stark in a "Deep Space Suit."

What could this "Deep Space Suit" really mean for Iron Man 3? According to inside sources, Tony Stark will in fact head into space at the end of Iron Man 3, where he will meet up with the stars of another Phase II adventure.

"According to sources, at the end of Iron Man 3, Tony actually does go up into space to hook up with the Guardians of the Galaxy where I also hear he appears at the end of that movie as well."

There is even more proof of a Tony Stark/Guardians of the Galaxy connection in the Marvel Now! Guardians of the Galaxy comic book cover.

@corey Agreed. Greta marketing teasing the cameo and pointing out the Marvel Now stream of comics flooding the shelves this year.

@ghostman Doesn't matter. Marvel is smart for marketing it now and starting up a new comic-series for it. Allows time for people to get more familiar with the characters and with the story.

@corey Even though traveling to space was a problem that nearly killed him in The Avengers. Makes sense as to why he made that Deep Space suit so he wouldn't have that problem anymore lol

@bawnian-dexeus Smart thinking. Although, I always thought Thor would have more to do with them since they're kinda like in the same space universe and all. But it's weird how we're getting a build up teaser to this movie when it doesn't come out for another year, let alone no one has been casted for it.

@ghostman You're gonna have to wait and find out. Or read that comic and get an idea of how he can be involved. He is Iron Man. He can easily travel to space.

I think it's a smart move, as Guardians is definitely the least-known property they've adapted so far in this universe. Having such a recognizable character as Stark set up the connection to that part of the larger story will help lure in casual fans who otherwise might not be interested, especially if they see marketing for GotG and think it looks like Green Lantern. People need to know that this IS part of the larger MCU, and the Guardians characters fit alongside the Avengers.

@bawnian-dexeus@corey I think it's cool they are doing that, but I wonder how Tony would be involved with GOTG.

@therealGoku I simply pointed out that at this point, it wouldn't surprise me if any movie between phase 2-3 were connected or had a cameo from other characters

@ghostman I think it being a Marvel movie in general will get their "butts in the movie seats". They cameo Iron Man in them to connect the films together. It's setting up Guardians of the Galaxy to Avengers 2. Not really a bad thing.
