Is Denzel Washington Green Lantern in ‘Batman Vs. Superman’?

Nuke the Fridge, not the most trusted scoop site on the web, is running a rumor story this morning that Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington is in early talks to play Green Lantern John Stewart in Batman Vs. Superman.

This (of course) has not been confirmed or denied by DC Comics or Warner Bros.

Earlier this month, it was widely rumored that Warner Bros. was seeking an African-American actor to step in as the film's main villain, Lex Luthor. Denzel Washington was reportedly wanted for this role, but talks never materialized with the studio. Also eyed by Warner Bros. were Thor's Idris Elba, who could not step out of his Marvel contract to take the part, and Arrow actor David Ramsey, who is currently in production on that DC Comics series for The CW.

It's interesting to note that the first 'inside source' that brought forward the Denzel Washington Lex Luthor scoop claimed the actor never came in for talks, yet this new rumor does. So what are we to believe?

El Mayimbe, of Latino Review does have a pretty strong track record when it comes to big movie scoops, and as he explained earlier this month, Warner Bros. and DC Comics is purposely feeding misinformation to the online crowds to throw them off the scent of what they are actually doing with Batman Vs. Superman.

So, is the studio looking to create a Justice League that not only has an old, tired Batman in Ben Affleck, but also an old, tired Green Lantern who is only five years away from retirement age and already eligible for his senior discount? (Denzel Washington will turn 60 this year).

John Stewart was an architect and veteran U.S. Marine from Detroit, Michigan who was selected as Hal Jordan's back-up guy. Its likely that we would have seen Stewart in a sequel to Green Lantern had that franchise managed to get itself off the ground. Nick Jones was rumored to have a cameo appearance in the 2011 movie, with the role to become recurring as the series continued on, but there is no mention of him in the finished edit, and many people believe he was cut out. In the comics, John was in his late thirties, early forties, but depending on how the actual story is going to play out, Denzel Washington's age could play to its strengths if done right.

In the original Lex Luthor casting story, it was suggested that each member of Justice League would be from a different nation, making up the sum of the world, with alien Kal-El (Superman) being seen as the 'immigrant' of the earth. Batman would be from Gotham City and represent the U.S., a Hispanic or Latino actor would play Flash in this scenario, and Wonder Woman would represent the Amazon. So, where does that place Green Lantern in this take on the story, since John is from Michigan? (I like the idea that he might be Black-Irish).

Do you think there is any truth to this latest Batman Vs. Superman rumor? Or is it just folks getting itchy during what is usually a slow time for news? Will Batman Vs. Superman eventually be announced as Justice League? If not, will we see as many characters as everyone is claiming? Do you care at this point?

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice comes to theaters March 25th, 2016.

@undeadslayer4 ...True, maybe they just make Batman a few years older than Superman, Superman did say he was 33 years old in MOS, maybe Batman will be in his late 30's

@undeadslayer4 ...I wouldnt put it past them if they did copy The Dark Knight Returns or use it as some inspiration for Batman in the film

I'd be very surprised if Denzel is the least bit interested in playing a superhero.

As far as Denzel goes, get him out of here. We don't want him anymore than he wants us.

This is getting dumb. I just watched Man of Steel again yesterday and this universe isn't ready for all these characters. It's sad because Marvel took a fantastic route and DC feels like they cant use it. I like the DC universe more then the Marvel (though spider man is my favorite), so I want to see them succeed and thrive but I don't see how shoving multiple characters into a movie will do that. I want origin stories and reasons for them to show up as do most I feel. Even with Batman; I know we've already seen the origin story enough but to me starting a new character (batman is certainly new to the world DC is creating) in a new movie there is need of origin and reason (though I am in fact OK with no origin for batman just cause it wouldn't sell as much right now, and I understand that). I truly don't want to see so many characters pop up without a proper introduction.....as if these characters have existed the entire time; talk about anticlimactic storytelling.

@rjh094 Sounds like a fair and reasonable assessment. The whole time people complain they fail to stop and reason with certain factors associated with the news we're getting. Factors like, this is all news that has neither been confirmed nor made official. We don't know what's happening. These hints are leading us to speculate on what's happening until the big reveal, Justice League or expansion film. This is DC not Marvel. Strategies have to be different. Properties need to be handled differently and carefully not to be made carbon copies of their competition. News had already been long revealed that the outing of Superman would play a pivotal role in the rest of the DC Universe in film. That means there is a possibility that a Justice League movie could be immediate. But what's overlooked most is the fact that all this news is getting us to do what they want, talk about it. Marketing at its best because love it or hate it now there is interest. And in the end, until anything is shared officially about story lines and details, photos and footage, we still know absolutely nothing in terms of the direction or development.

The destruction caused in Man of Steel and the attention Superman brought to himself has to be addressed by other heroes in the "DC Universe". I think Batman will be the one stubborn and brave enough to actually go toe-to-toe with the Man of Steel. Any other hero, will probably be mentioned or something. I'm looking at this film as the "dawn of superheroes" for the film's universe. Superman took the forefront, now all the heroes are doing the same. Just my guess.

@dcrock one I find this is just a fake news thing to upset people or force us to talk about it. Second he's still young, Danzel isn't the type to be in a Superhero flick.

If it turns into a flop, DC will have their name ruined and would sue WB.

You people are acting like he's 90 years old. He may be turning 60 but he can pass as 45. It's a movie not reality. He can play a 10 year old if it makes sense in the confines of a movie.lol

This doesn't sound legitimate, but regardless this whole project is sounding like a jumbled mess. I wasn't really concerned until they brought in a new writer (screenwriter from Argo) to overhaul the script.

Who knows, maybe this whole "Batman Vs. Superman" is all a cover-up and is really the Justice League.
