Nuke the Fridge, not the most trusted scoop site on the web, is running a rumor story this morning that Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington is in early talks to play Green Lantern John Stewart in Batman Vs. Superman.
This (of course) has not been confirmed or denied by DC Comics or Warner Bros.
http://movieweb.com/does-warner-bros-want-an-african-american-lex-luthor-for-batman-vs-superman/Earlier this month, it was widely rumored that Warner Bros. was seeking an African-American actor to step in as the film's main villain, Lex Luthor. Denzel Washington was reportedly wanted for this role, but talks never materialized with the studio. Also eyed by Warner Bros. were Thor's Idris Elba, who could not step out of his Marvel contract to take the part, and Arrow actor David Ramsey, who is currently in production on that DC Comics series for The CW.
It's interesting to note that the first 'inside source' that brought forward the Denzel Washington Lex Luthor scoop claimed the actor never came in for talks, yet this new rumor does. So what are we to believe?
El Mayimbe, of Latino Review does have a pretty strong track record when it comes to big movie scoops, and as he explained earlier this month, Warner Bros. and DC Comics is purposely feeding misinformation to the online crowds to throw them off the scent of what they are actually doing with Batman Vs. Superman.
So, is the studio looking to create a Justice League that not only has an old, tired Batman in Ben Affleck, but also an old, tired Green Lantern who is only five years away from retirement age and already eligible for his senior discount? (Denzel Washington will turn 60 this year).
John Stewart was an architect and veteran U.S. Marine from Detroit, Michigan who was selected as Hal Jordan's back-up guy. Its likely that we would have seen Stewart in a sequel to Green Lantern had that franchise managed to get itself off the ground. Nick Jones was rumored to have a cameo appearance in the 2011 movie, with the role to become recurring as the series continued on, but there is no mention of him in the finished edit, and many people believe he was cut out. In the comics, John was in his late thirties, early forties, but depending on how the actual story is going to play out, Denzel Washington's age could play to its strengths if done right.
In the original Lex Luthor casting http://movieweb.com/does-warner-bros-want-an-african-american-lex-luthor-for-batman-vs-superman/story, it was suggested that each member of Justice League would be from a different nation, making up the sum of the world, with alien Kal-El (Superman) being seen as the 'immigrant' of the earth. Batman would be from Gotham City and represent the U.S., a Hispanic or Latino actor would play Flash in this scenario, and Wonder Woman would represent the Amazon. So, where does that place Green Lantern in this take on the story, since John is from Michigan? (I like the idea that he might be Black-Irish).
Do you think there is any truth to this latest Batman Vs. Superman rumor? Or is it just folks getting itchy during what is usually a slow time for news? Will Batman Vs. Superman eventually be announced as Justice League? If not, will we see as many characters as everyone is claiming? Do you care at this point?
