While we have seen set photos of Tom Cruise as the title character Jack Reacher, today we have our first official look at the actor in this adaptation of Lee Child's novel One Shot. Take a look at the photo, and read on to see what writer-director Christopher McQuarrie had to say about this ex-military policeman.

The filmmaker explained that this stoic drifter has very few ties to anyone in modern society.

"Someone asks him at one point in the story about the difference between a military policeman and a regular cop. Reacher points out that [for military police], every suspect is a trained killer. He is free from any sort of anxiety. He is truly not encumbered by all the bulls-t that makes up our daily lives. He literally and figuratively has no baggage."

Every hero has a weakness, though, and Jack Reacher's soft spot is that he always has to rectify any wrongdoing he comes across, according to the writer-director.

"He is an extremely pragmatic, matter-of-fact person. He's very solitary, but he can't walk away from a situation that needs to be made right. His own sense of right and wrong tie into that situation and he can't leave until it's been resolved. That's his Achilles heel."

There has been some controversy over this adaptation, since Jack Reacher is a hulking 6'5" man in the Lee Child novel, and Tom Cruise is only 5'7". The actor recently revealed that the author approved of his casting.

"For those of you who know the books, I'm obviously not 6-foot-5, like Jack Reacher. But Lee felt that I was the right guy to drive fast cars and kick the s-t out of people onscreen."
