Lionsgate is moving forward with its Jekyll movie, and it seems the studio has found its leading man. A new report reveals that Captain America: Civil War star Chris Evans has become attached in the lead role as Tom Jackman for the studio. The project is still in fairly early stages, with no director attached at this time.

Deadline reports that the studio is developing this project based on the 2007 UK miniseries of the same name. The miniseries spanned six episodes and was written by Doctor Who and Sherlock creator Steven Moffat. Lionsgate has brought in Anthony Bagarozzi and Chuck Mondry (The Nice Guys) to write the script, although no plot details were given.

Interestingly enough, The Nice Guys star Russell Crowe recently signed on to play Dr. Jekyll in Universal Pictures' monster reboot The Mummy, where he'll star alongside Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella, Annabelle Wallis and Jake Johnson. The Robert Louis Stevenson novel that the Jekyll character debuts in is currently in the public domain, which could set the stage for a showdown between both versions of Dr. Jekyll. Then again, The Mummy is deep into production, with a June 9, 2017 release date set, and Jekyll isn't nearly that far into production yet.

The original BBC miniseries starred James Nesbitt as Jackman, who is a modern-day descendant of Dr. Jekyll who begins to show signs of the split personality disorder that plagued his late relative. He abandons his family to live in a basement stronghold where he tries to find a way for both personalities to co-exist. It isn't known how closely this movie will be adapted from the miniseries, which essentially served as a sequel to the original novel.

Chris Evans will return as Capain America in the highly-anticipated Avengers: Infinity War, which is scheduled to start filming in November. He also stars in Gifted alongside Jenny Slate and Octavia Spencer for director Marc Webb. Writers Anthony Bagarozzi and Chuck Mondry are also writing the upcoming Doc Savage for The Nice Guys director Shane Black and Death Note, which recently started filming under the direction of Adam Wingard.
