Jennifer Garner is in talks to join the cast of Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, which has Steve Carell attached to star.

Based on the popular 1972 children's book by Judith Viorst, the story centers on a young boy who wakes up with gum in his hair, and finds his day getting progressively worse. When he makes a wish that his family could experience his suffering, the wish comes true. Steve Carell is playing Alexander's father, with Jennifer Garner set to play the title character's mother.

Miguel Arteta (Youth in Revolt) is directing from a screenplay by Lisa Cholodenko and Rob Leiber. Shawn Levy and Dan Levine are producing through their 21 Laps production company, alongside The Henson Company's Lisa Henson. Production will commence sometime this fall.

Jennifer Garner will next be seen in Dallas Buyers Club. The actress is prepping to shoot Draft Day for director Ivan Reitman.
