After Lionsgate's lucrative Hunger Games franchise ends this fall with The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2, actress Jennifer Lawrence may re-unite with director Francis Lawrence on a new project for 20th Century Fox, entitled Red Sparrow. Francis Lawrence became attached to direct earlier this summer, but now Deadline reports that Jennifer Lawrence is now being eyed to star. There was talk that Jennifer Lawrence was being eyed earlier this summer, when Francis Lawrence came aboard, but she might not be officially attached for some time.

Justin Haythe (Snitch, The Lone Ranger) has come aboard to rewrite the adapted script, which was originally written by Eric Warren Singer (American Hustle, The International). based on the novel by Jason Matthews. The story is set in modern-day Russia, following Dominika Egorova, a spy forced into becoming a "sparrow," who is trained to seduce rival agents. Her first assignment is a CIA operative tasked with handling Russian intelligence, but they soon fall for one another, threatening both their careers and the identities of moles in both the American and Russian governments.

The story follows Dominika as she seeks revenge against her heartless Russian masters, and living a fatal double life after she is recruited by the CIA to ferret out a high-level traitor in Washington, while still hoping to return to Moscow as part of the new generation of Vladimir Putin's intelligence service. Darren Aronofsky was initially attached to direct Red Sparrow for 20th Century Fox back in 2013, shortly after the studio acquired Jason Matthews' novel. David Fincher was also circling the project at one time, but he is no longer involved.

Steven Zaillian and Garrett Basch are producing with Chernin Entertainment. It isn't known when production may begin on this project. Francis Lawrence directed Jennifer Lawrence on the last three Hunger Games movies, 2013's The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, last year's The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2, which brings the franchise to a close on November 20.

After The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 hits theaters in November, Jennifer Lawrence will next be seen in Joy, directed by David O. Russell, which hits theaters on Christmas Day. The 25-year-old, who was the highest-paid actress of 2015, will then star in Passengers alongside Chris Pratt, which arrives in theaters December 21, 2016. Do you think Jennifer Lawrence would be a good fit for Red Sparrow?
