Producer Joel Silver has acquired the spec screenplay Straight Edge by xXx screenwriter Rich Wilkes for his Silver Pictures company.

The action-thriller is set in Los Angeles, revolving around a heist gone afoul involving several characters including corrupt L.A.P.D. cops and dangerous gang members. The script was described as having an edge similar to 1980s classics such as 48 Hours and Lethal Weapon, both of which were produced by Joel Silver.

It isn't known if the producer will bring this project to Universal Pictures, under his new first-look distribution deal, or if he will take it elsewhere to find financing. Joel Silver left his longtime studio home Warner Bros. in April, before inking his new deal with Universal. Joel Silver will produce alongside his Silver Pictures partners Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman.

Rich Wilkes also wrote the screenplay for Marvel's Iron Fist. His previous credits include comedies such as Airheads, The Jerky Boys, and Glory Daze.
