Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep are both in negotiations to star in August: Osage County for The Weinstein Company, according to Deadline New York.

John Wells is directing the new movie from a script by Tracy Letts, who adapted her own Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning play of the same name. Meryl Streep will play the drug-addicted mother of the Weston family, Violet, with Julia Roberts portraying her oldest daughter, Barbara Fordham. When Violet's husband goes missing, Barbara returns home with her two sisters to comfort their mother. While they're at home, numerous family secrets are revealed. Barbara is also going through her own issues, with her husband having an affair with a college student.

Harvey Weinstein, who was involved with the original play, and Jean Doumanian will produce the new movie. The Weinstein Company will also distribute John Wells's feature directorial debut, The Company Men, which will be released on October 22.

The site reports that August: Osage County will go into production by next summer.
