Golden Globe winner Ke Huy Quan says he would love to return for a sequel to The Goonies. While speaking with Deadline recently, the actor, who has seen his career reignited after his award-winning performance in the absurdist action-comedy-drama Everything Everywhere All at Once, stated that, while he is none the wiser regarding The Goonies 2, he would jump at the chance to reunite with the rest of the gang.

“Sadly we lost Dick Donner, the captain of our ship. I really don’t know if there will be a Goonies 2, but I’m open to revisiting the character.”

Released in 1985 and directed by Richard Donner, childhood favorite The Goonies follows a group of kids who live in the "Goon Docks" neighborhood of Astoria, Oregon. They must come together to attempt to save their homes from foreclosure and, in doing so, discover an old treasure map that takes them on an adventure to unearth the long-lost fortune of One-Eyed Willy, a legendary 17th-century pirate.

Ke Huy Quan plays Richard "Data" Wang, a James Bond fanatic with a penchant for gadgets, in The Goonies, with the actor revealing that he has been hoping to see a sequel take shape for decades.

“For the last 30 something years we tried to do Goonies 2. I wished it had come to pass when I was young, I thought I would need it to make a career comeback. We had numerous scripts, but not one script that felt that it could live up to the original.”

Goonies 2 Need to be a Legacy Sequel Akin to Top: Gun Maverick, Says Co-Star Corey Feldman

While there have been rumors regarding a Goonies sequel for some time, with a script even being written by The Goldbergs creator Adam F. Goldberg, the project has never materialized. But, with Ke Huy Quan now on board, perhaps The Goonies 2 is edging ever closer to reality.

Ke Huy Quan is not the only member of The Goonies who wants to see a sequel take shape, with Corey Feldman, who played Clark "Mouth" Devereaux in the original, stating last year that he is still holding out hope for a long-awaited follow-up. “That said, I still want to make a sequel to Goonies,” the actor said. “I don't know if it will ever happen -- especially with Donner gone, it's a sad thing. But every few years, it seems like there's a new idea in the pipeline and Warner Bros. gets that close to pushing the button and then it just falls apart. So who knows? Maybe one day it will happen, maybe not."

But how to approach such a project? Well, according to Feldman, The Goonies 2 should be a legacy sequel akin to another 80s return, the box office dominating Top Gun: Maverick. "You don't want a remake, because that's what they did with Ghostbusters with the girls,” Feldman explained. “No, no, no. You want like a Top Gun sequel, right? They did it right with Top Gun."

While we await the day that The Goonies 2 finally goes into production, Goonies fans will soon be treated to more material courtesy of Disney+. The streaming platform is due to release the Goonies-centered project Our Time, which follows a group of young, aspiring filmmakers who attempt to remake the beloved Richard Donner movie on a shoestring budget.
