It was believed that Ready Player One would be the next project for acclaimed director Steven Spielberg. But he actually has a much more serious movie ready to go first. He will be at the helm of The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara next. And he's already found his leading man in Mark Rylance.

Mark Rylance and Steven Spielberg are building quite the collaborative body of work. The actor won an Oscar for his performance in the director's Bridge of Spies earlier this year. And he will next be seen playing the title role in Steven Spielberg's family fantasy adventure The BFG. The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara is being produced by Amblin Entertainment.

The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara is based on the book by Pulitzer Prize-winner David Kertzer. Tony Kushner is adapting the screenplay for the big screen. In the movie, Mark Rylance will star as Pope Pius IX. Bridge of Spies producers Marc Platt and Kristie Macosko Krieger will reunite with Steven Spielberg yet again on this project.

The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara will shoot in the early part of 2017, with a late 2017 release date. It may be positioned as a Christmas Day release. Ready Player One was originally slated to open in December 2017, but it was moved to avoid colliding with LucasFilm and Disney's blockbuster sequel Star Wars: Episode VIII. That movie is now set to open in March 2018. It is presumed that Ready Player One will be shot immediately after The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara in 2017. Though, it might be shooting later in 2016. The production schedule isn't immediately clear. But The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara will beat Ready Player One into theaters by a couple of months

The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara was originally published in 1997. It follows a young Jewish boy living in Bologna, Italy in 1858. Having been secretly baptized, he is removed from his family and raised as a Christian. The boy's family hopes to free their son, but become part of a large political battle that pits them against the Pope, democracy and Italian unification. What do you think? Does it sound like another Oscar winner? Or were you more excited for Ready Player One? Steven Spielberg will follow up both of these movies with the highly anticipated Indiana Jones 5 in 2019.
