Just a few weeks after Corey Antonio Hawkins joined Legendary Pictures' Kong: Skull Island, Variety reports the actor's Straight Outta Compton co-star Jason Mitchell is in talks to join the cast. If the actor does sign on, he will join a cast that also includes Tom Hiddleston and Brie Larson. We reported earlier this month that Samuel L. Jackson and Tom Wilkinson are being eyed to replace Michael Keaton and J.K. Simmons in Kong: Skull Island.

The story centers on a group of explorers who go on an expedition to Skull Island, the home of King Kong. The story is said to be in the spirit of Legendary's recent blockbuster Godzilla, keeping the same established mythology of the creature intact while placing the story in a new and distinct timeline. If he signs on, Jason Mitchell will portray a pilot, but no details were given for the other characters quite yet.

Jordan Vogt-Roberts (The Kings of Summer) is directing from a script originally written by John Gatins (Flight), Max Borenstein (Godzilla) and Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler). We reported earlier this month that Derek Connolly (Jurassic World) has come aboard to rewrite the script. Production is scheduled to begin this October, on location in Hawaii, with shooting also scheduled to take place in Vietnam and Iceland.

Legendary's Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni are producing, with Alex Garcia set to executive produce. The film will be released in 3D and IMAX 3D by Universal Pictures, but it isn't known yet if the filmmakers plan to shoot in native 3D, or convert the film to 3D during post-production. Universal and Legendary have set a March 10, 2017 release date, which puts the movie up against Captain Underpants.

Jason Mitchell has been receiving rave reviews for his performance as Eazy-E in Straight Outta Compton. He will next be seen in Vincent-N-Roxxy, and the actor is currently shooting Keanu alongside Keegan Michael Key, Jordan Peele and Method Man. Are you looking forward to seeing what Jason Mitchell can bring to Kong: Skull Island?
