Back in 2014, filmmaker Sam Raimi announced to a packed Hall H crowd at Comic Con that he is working on a movie adaptation of the hit video game The Last of Us, co-writing the script with Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann, who directed the video game. It was teased at the SDCC panel that the movie adaptation may star Game of Thrones actress Maisie Williams and Bruce Campbell. We haven't heard any updates on the project for quite some time, but IGN managed to catch up with Neil Druckmann, who confirmed the project has slipped into "development hell."

"I know I said in an interview a while back we had a table read, got the script to a good place and it kind of entered development hell like these things tend to do. There hasn't been any work done on it in over a year and a half."

The interview Neil Druckmann is referring to happened in late January 2015, where he confirmed that a second draft of the script had been finished, and that there will be some big changes in the story, while staying faithful to the game. Neil Druckmann never confirmed any of the actors who were present at the table read, and it isn't known if Maisie Williams and Bruce Campbell were present for that reading. Regardless, since no work has been done in a year and a half, it remains to be seen if the video game project will ever get out of development hell.

The story of The Last of Us follows Joel, a ruthless survivor with few moral lines left to cross, who lives in one of the last remaining Quarantine Zones. These walled-off, oppressive cities are run by what's left of the military. Despite the strict martial law, Joel operates in the black market of the city, smuggling contraband for the right price. Joel is asked by a dying friend to look after Ellie, a fourteen-year-old girl with courage beyond her years. What starts out as a simple job to deliver Ellie to another Quarantine Zone, soon transforms into a profound journey that will forever change Joel and Ellie.

As they trek across a post-pandemic United States, Joel and Ellie will encounter different factions of survivors that have each found a unique way of dealing with the infected humans, the lack of supplies, and the threat of other survivors. As Joel and Ellie struggle to persevere, they must learn to trust each other and work together in order to survive the realities of this new world.

At its core, The Last of Us is about the bond that forms between Joel and Ellie - it is the story of love, loyalty, and redemption. Are you disappointed that The Last of Us movie may not move forward?
