It's a sad day for Legally Blonde fans everywhere, with star Reese Witherspoon announcing that the movie's beloved Chihuahua Bruiser Woods, a.k.a. Moonie, has passed away. The news was first confirmed by the dog's trainer, Sue Chip, who sent out a photo of the beloved pooch with Reese Witherspoon that was taken during the actress' Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony back in 2010. Here's what Reese Witherspoon had to say in a statement to her Instagram followers earlier today.

"With a sad heart, I have to let all the #LegallyBlonde fans know that Bruiser Woods (also known as Moonie) passed away yesterday. He was a sweet little Chihuahua who was very loved. I will never forget all the days we spent together ... I'm sure his tail is wagging in the sky. Sending love to his trainer, the wonderful @tailsticks #RIPBruiser"

Legally Blonde was the only movie that Moonie starred in, with another pooch named Moondoggie taking over for the sequel, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White, & Blonde. Reese Witherspoon revealed in October that she wants to see Legally Blonde 3 happen sometime soon, but it isn't known if that project is in active development or not. Here's what Moonie's trainer Sue Chip had to say in her statement about Moonie's passing, revealing the pint-sized dog was 18 years old at the time of his death

"On this day - a day of "throwbacks" I give you one of the greatest little dogs..."Moonie" of Legally Blonde fame. I'm sad to say that this morning in Los Angeles he left us. He was a whopping 18 years old. I remember the day I brought him home as a puppy."

The first Legally Blonde took in $96.4 million domestically and $141.7 million worldwide, from just an $18 million budget. The 2003 sequel Legally Blonde 2: Red, White, & Blonde took in $90.1 million at the domestic box office and $124.9 million worldwide from a $45 million budget. While the sequel didn't fare quite as well as the original, the franchise still has a strong fan base, who will likely be mourning the loss of Bruiser Woods today.
