In 1979, Ridley Scott used one simple word. Alien. And it became an instantly recognizable franchise. Now, Sony Pictures hopes to capture that same kind of simplicity with their likeminded new sci-fi thriller Life. The first trailer debuted last night during The Walking Dead, and it proved to be quite scary.

Life tells the story of the six-member crew of the International Space Station that is on the cutting edge of one of the most important discoveries in human history: the first evidence of extraterrestrial life on Mars. As the crew begins to conduct research, their methods end up having unintended consequences and the life form proves more intelligent than anyone ever expected.

Life is directed by Daniel Espinosa. He first made a name for himself with the action crime drama Easy Money, starring Joel Kinnaman. He would then go onto direct Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington in the mystery thriller Safe House. Last year, he brought the drama Child 44, once again starring Joel Kinnaman alongside Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman and Noomi Rapace.

While Life serves as a reunion between leading man Ryan Reynolds and director Daniel Espinosa, genre fans might be more excited to see that Reynolds is also once again working with writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese. This duo is responsible for the Deadpool screenplay, which helped turn that Marvel superhero adventure into a box office phenomena earlier this year. And the trio will be back in 2018 for Deadpool 2.

Life marks the first time Ryan Reynolds and co-star Jake Gyllenhaal have worked together in a movie. Also starring in this ensemble are Rebecca Ferguson, Hiroyuki Sanada, Ariyon Bakare, and Olga Dihovichnay. The movie is produced by David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Bonnie Curtis and Julie Lynn. They are working alongside Executive Producers Don Granger and Vicki Dee Rock. You can take a look at the very scary trailer for Life here, courtesy of Sony Pictures.
