20th Century Fox has hired screenwriter Will Widger to pen a live action adaptation of the Boom! Studios comic book Lumberjanes. The comic, created by Shannon Watters, Grace Ellis and Noelle Stevenson, with Brooke A. Allen serving as illustrator, was originally intended to be an eight-issue limited series, but quickly became an ongoing comic series following strong sales and critical acclaim. The comic was nominated for two Eisner Awards, Best New Series and Best Publication for Teens (ages 13-17), which will be announced at Comic-Con 2015 this year.

Lumberjanes centers on best friends Jo, April, Mal, Molly and Ripley, who all attend summer camp together, where they end up fighting a slew of supernatural creatures and discover a mystery that could threaten the entire world. 20th Century Fox is already targeting a number of female directors to take the helm on this project, once the script by Will Widger is complete. The project is considered a high priority for 20th Century Fox, but it isn't known when production may begin.

Boom! Studios' Ross Richie and Stephen Christy will produce Lumberjanes, with Adam Yoelin serving as co-producer. Fox executives Kira Goldberg, who bought Will Widger's take on the comic, and Ryan Jones will oversee the project on behalf of the studio. Will Widger made the 2014 Black List with his screenplay The Munchkin, following a very small private eye that uncovers a number of conspiracies involving The Wizard of Oz.
