The director behind critically acclaimed films such as Your Name and Weathering With You has revealed his next project. Makoto Shinkai unveiled the poster for Suzume no Tojimari (Suzume’s Door-Locking) at a press conference on Wednesday at the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo. This information comes from Anime News Network.

Shinkai went on to describe the film as a modern adventure story, an action film, and a road movie. Suzume no Tojimari follows a 17-year-old girl from a quiet town in Kyushu, one day she comes across a young man looking for a door. The two travel to the mountains and find a mysterious door surrounded by ruins. The two end up going on a mysterious journey which leads to doors all around Japan opening and bringing trouble from the other side.

According to Anime News Network, Shinkai stated that there are three important points about the film. It is a road trip movie around the country of Japan, it’s a story about “closing doors” rather than opening them, and it’s a reason to visit the movie theater. Shinkai elaborated that closing doors can refer to tying loose ends or finishing something.

Shinkai is credited with directing the film, creating the original story, and writing the screenplay. Masayoshi Tanaka is returning to work with Shinkai for designing the characters, he previously worked with the director as character designer for both Your Name and Weathering With You. Another returning name is Kenichi Tsuchiya, who worked on the previous two films as a key animator, though with Suzume no Tojimari he will be the animation director. Finally, Takumi Tanji (who did background art in the previous two films) will be stepping in as art director. The film will be produced by CoMix Wave Films and Story Inc. Toho will be distributing the film.

Weathering With You, Shinkai’s most recent film, opened in Japan in 2019. The film told the story of a high school boy who befriends a girl with the power to control the weather through prayer. The film became the 7th highest-earning domestic film of all time (now #8 after the release of Demon Slayer: Mugen Train) and was the highest-grossing film in Japan in 2019. Weathering With You currently holds a critic’s score of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Your Name opened in Japan in 2016. The film tells the story of a boy living in Tokyo and a girl living in the Japanese countryside who wakes up one day to find that they have inexplicably have swapped bodies. The movie grew to become the fifth highest-grossing film of all time in Japan, as well as the third highest-grossing anime film of all time (under Spirited Away and Demon Slayer: Mugen Train). The film currently holds a critic’s score of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes.

If you’ve seen either of Makoto Shinkai’s previous two films, you probably have an idea of what to expect. A ton of adventure, beautiful hand-drawn animation, and a lot of heartstring-tugging. While the door on Suzume no Tojimari’s poster appears to be closed, hopefully, the wait won’t feel too long before we see what’s on the other side. Suzume no Tojimari is set to open in fall 2022.
