Director Tim Burton has left the Disney project Maleficent, the live-action fantasy adventure which has Angelina Jolie attached to star.

We last reported on this project in March 2010, when news of Angelina Jolie's interest in Maleficent first surfaced. We never heard if the actress did officially sign on or not, although this new report indicates Maleficent is being developed as a starring vehicle for Angelina Jolie. Linda Woolverton is writing the screenplay for Maleficent.

It isn't said why Tim Burton is leaving the project, although he was only loosely attached to Maleficent. Disney executives are still moving forward, though, seeking a new director for the project. One of the directors mentioned was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 director David Yates. However, we reported in March that David Yates may direct The Gangster Squad for Warner Bros., although a deal hasn't been signed yet.

The story will be told from Maleficent's point-of-view, instead of Sleeping Beauty's, although little else is known about the plot line.
