Disney has been searching for a director to take over its Maleficent project ever since Tim Burton stepped away last month. One of the potential replacement directors being mentioned is David O. Russell.
David O. Russell currently has a slot open in his schedule after he left the video game adaptation Uncharted: Drake's Fortune in May. Nothing is official yet, with insiders contending other directors are also up for the job.
Maleficent is a live-action tale told from the point of view of the title villain, the evil witch from Sleeping Beauty. Angelina Jolie has long been attached to portray Maleficent. Linda Woolverton (Alice in Wonderland) wrote the screenplay for Maleficent.
Our report from May also mentioned David Yates (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2) as a possible directorial candidate for Maleficent. It isn't known if he is still in the mix, but he could very well be one of those other directors circling the job.
It isn't known when production will start on Maleficent quite yet.
