Since Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness appeared to bring an end to the story of Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch, there have been rumors about her potential future in the MCU. While Elizabeth Olson was said to have signed a new deal to continue playing the character, there has been no word on when or how that may occur. Many have already speculated that Wanda did not perish in the finale of the multiverse movie, or that she could live on through one of her multiverse counterparts. Adding fuel to the fire, Marvel producer Richie Palmer has hinted that we have not seen the last of Wanda Maximoff.

In the latest Doctor Strange adventure, Wanda became the villain of the piece as her corruption by the Darkhold caused her to go on a rampage across the multiverse in order to be reunited with her sons in another reality. Having dispatched of the Illuminati in one universe and subsequently redeemed herself by destroying the Darkhold in all realities, Wanda appears to make the ultimate sacrifice in her final moments by destroying herself in the process. Of course, unless a character is actually seen to die on screen – although sometimes that isn’t entirely certain – there is always a belief that they will return in the future. In the audio commentary of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Palmer hints at Wanda’s future return. He said:

"If Doctor Strange is the anchor of the MCU of Phase 4, then Wanda Maximoff is the jewel in the crown."

While many fans have been disappointed at the stripped-back scope of recent movies, with theories creating massive expectations, all hints of Phase 4 of the MCU have indicated that the storyline is essentially heading towards a Secret Wars outcome somewhere in the somewhat distant future. Kevin Feige has already promised that all will be revealed about the next phase soon, and this could start with Marvel’s return to San Diego Comic-Con and the subsequent D23 panel in September.

While there is nothing yet known for certain beyond next summer’s The Marvels, Feige has said that there are plenty of hints as to where things are headed, and all fans are waiting on is exactly what that will entail. Feige said recently:

"I think there have been many clues already, that are at least apparent to me, of where this whole saga is going. But we'll be a little more direct about that in the coming months, to set a plan, so audiences who want to see the bigger picture can see a tiny, tiny, tiny bit more of the roadmap."

With many new Disney+ projects currently running alongside cinematic releases, there are a lot of new characters and stories already waiting to be told. Where it all goes from here, though, including where the Scarlet Witch could make her return, is something that we are not too far away from finding out.
