Actress Rosa Salazar has signed on for a major role in the 20th Century Fox sequel The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, which is currently in pre-production.

The actress will play Brenda, who meets Dylan O'Brien's Thomas while they're both using tunnels under the city to flee from their pursuers, after Thomas and his group have escaped from The Glade. In The Maze Runner, there was only one female in Thomas' group, Teresa (Kaya Scodelario), and in the follow-up, Brenda is the only girl in her clan. The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Thomas, "will find himself in a potential love triangle," when Brenda comes into the picture.

We reported last week that Game of Thrones star Aidan Gillen has signed on the play the villainous Janson, the highest-ranking member of the evil organization WICKED after Chancellor Ava Paige (Patricia Clarkson).

Wes Ball is returning to direct from a script by T.S. Nowlin, based on James Dashner's novel. 20th Century Fox has already issued a September 18, 2015 release date for the sequel.

Rosa Salazar is best known for playing Maria in the first season of FX's American Horror Story, and she also played Zoe DeHaven on NBC's Parenthood. On the big screen, she'll next be seen in The Divergent Series: Insurgent and Search Party.
